What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry focuses on maintaining the health of your teeth and gums before problems develop. It includes routine cleanings, comprehensive exams, digital x-rays, and a range of protective treatments designed to catch issues early and keep your smile in its best possible shape. At The Dental Boutique, every preventive visit includes a thorough exam with Dr. Franco, who reviews your imaging personally and walks you through his findings in plain language. Regular preventive care is how small concerns stay small, and how you avoid the kind of dental work that could have been prevented with consistent attention.

Why it matters

The benefits of preventive dentistry

Staying consistent with preventive care is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your long-term health. Routine visits do far more than clean your teeth — they protect your overall wellbeing, save you money over time, and give your dentist the chance to catch problems while they are still simple to address.

Catch problems early

Small cavities, early gum disease, and signs of wear are much easier and less expensive to treat when they are caught at a routine visit rather than after symptoms develop.

Protect your overall health

Research consistently links oral health to overall health. Conditions like gum disease have been associated with heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic concerns, making regular dental care an important part of caring for your whole body.

Save money in the long run

Preventive care is among the most cost-effective dental care available. A routine cleaning and exam today is far less involved than a crown, root canal, or implant tomorrow.

Our preventive dentistry treatments

Cleanings and hygiene

Regular professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that daily brushing and flossing simply cannot reach on their own. Most patients benefit from coming in every six months, though those with a history of gum disease or other concerns may benefit from more frequent visits. Consistent cleanings are the single most effective thing you can do to protect your teeth and gums between appointments.

Digital x-rays

Digital x-rays allow Dr. Franco to see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and below the gumline — areas that a visual exam alone cannot reach. Compared to traditional film x-rays, digital imaging is faster, more comfortable, and produces significantly less radiation. Dr. Franco reviews your imaging personally before every exam.

Oral cancer screenings

Oral cancer screenings are a routine part of every comprehensive exam at The Dental Boutique. Dr. Franco checks the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and neck for any signs that warrant further attention. Early detection is critical — when oral cancer is caught in its earliest stages, outcomes improve significantly.

Laser dentistry

Laser therapy allows Dr. Franco to address a range of soft-tissue concerns with greater precision and less discomfort than traditional techniques. Lasers can be used for bacterial reduction during periodontal treatment and a variety of soft-tissue procedures where minimizing discomfort and healing time matters. Laser technology at The Dental Boutique expands what can be accomplished in a single visit and supports better outcomes across a wide range of procedures.

Fluoride treatment

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps protect against decay, particularly for patients who are cavity-prone or have areas of early demineralization. Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and applied at the end of your cleaning appointment. They are recommended for both younger patients and adults who can benefit from an extra layer of protection.

Dental sealants

Dental sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where grooves and pits tend to trap food and bacteria. Applied in a single visit with no drilling or anesthetic, sealants are a simple preventive step that significantly reduces the risk of cavities in hard-to-clean areas.

Night guards

If you grind or clench your teeth at night, a custom night guard can protect your teeth from wear, reduce jaw tension, and help prevent cracked teeth, worn enamel, and long-term bite problems. At The Dental Boutique, night guards are custom-fabricated using digital impressions for a precise, comfortable fit.

Sports guards

A custom sports guard is one of the most effective ways to protect your teeth during contact sports and physical activity. Unlike over-the-counter options, a custom-fitted sports guard from The Dental Boutique is designed specifically for your bite — more comfortable, more protective, and far less likely to be left in a gym bag.

What to expect at a preventive visit

1

Check-in and x-rays

Your visit begins with a warm welcome from our team. If you are a new patient, your paperwork will already be on file through our online portal. A clinical assistant will bring you back and take a full set of digital x-rays so Dr. Franco has everything he needs before your exam begins. Returning patients receive updated imaging at regular intervals based on their individual needs.

2

Professional cleaning

We'll perform a professional cleaning, removing plaque and tartar from all surfaces of your teeth, even below the gumline. If there are any areas of concern, they will flag them for Dr. Franco ahead of your exam.

3

Exam with Dr. Franco

Dr. Franco reviews your x-rays, performs a thorough clinical exam, and shares his findings with you in plain language. He checks for cavities, signs of gum disease, bite concerns, oral cancer indicators, and anything else that warrants attention. If treatment is recommended, he explains why, walks you through your options, and gives you a clear picture of what the path forward looks like before anything is scheduled.

Most patients benefit from visiting every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. However, patients with a history of gum disease, higher cavity risk, or other ongoing concerns may benefit from more frequent visits, typically every three to four months. Dr. Franco will make a personalized recommendation based on your specific oral health needs at your first visit.

Not necessarily. The frequency of x-rays depends on your age, oral health history, and risk factors. New patients receive a full-mouth series so Dr. Franco has a complete baseline. After that, bitewing x-rays are typically taken once a year, and more comprehensive imaging is ordered as needed. Digital x-rays at The Dental Boutique use significantly less radiation than traditional film.

Yes. Even with a consistent home care routine, plaque can harden into tartar in areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss alone. Once tartar forms, it can only be removed with professional instruments. Regular cleanings also give Dr. Franco and his team the chance to monitor your gum health, catch early signs of decay, and keep small problems from becoming larger ones.
